Application Problems

You want to go to your uncle’s house. You have two options. Option A is to take a taxi which will cost you $10 plus $1.5 per additional mile. Option B is to drive by yourself. The cost of gasoline is $2 per mile.

Write a system of equations in order to solve this problem.

After how many miles will the total costs of the two options be the same?

  1. y= 1.5x+10
    y= 2x

    2x= 1.5x+10
    .5x=10
    x= .05
    y=2(.05)
    y=.1 miles
